Theresa DeMarco, a ADA certified expert, gives tips and tricks for creating play spaces that are not only ada compliant, but truly inclusive.
When designing a playground, meeting ADA requirements is essential, but creating a space where all children can fully engage and play together takes thoughtful planning. While ADA compliance ensures basic accessibility, an inclusive playground goes beyond the minimum to provide meaningful experiences for children of all abilities. Understanding the key compliance requirements, the difference between accessibility and inclusivity, and how to take play spaces to the next level can make all the difference in creating a playground that is truly welcoming to everyone.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sets the baseline for accessibility in public play areas, ensuring children with disabilities can access and use playgrounds. Some of the key requirements include:
Meeting these standards is a legal requirement, but it does not necessarily create a fully inclusive play space.
ADA compliance ensures that a playground is physically accessible, but inclusiveness is about making sure all children can play, interact, and engage meaningfully. While a compliant playground may have the required number of accessible play elements, if those elements don’t encourage interaction or varied play experiences, children with disabilities may still feel excluded.
For example, having a ramp leading to a play structure may make it accessible, but if most of the play activities involve climbing ladders, children with mobility challenges might not be able to fully participate. A truly inclusive playground considers different types of play—social, sensory, imaginative, and active—to ensure that all children can engage together, rather than being limited to separate areas.
To create a playground that is truly inclusive, consider these strategies:
By focusing on accessibility, inclusivity, and thoughtful design, we can ensure that every child, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to play, explore, and connect with others.
